Dr Mei-Ling Cheng, MBBS, FRCOphthConsultant Ophthalmic Surgeonbook an appointment

Dr Mei-Ling Cheng is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in Glaucoma, offering non-surgical and surgical treatments and Cataract surgery.  Originally from Yorkshire, she graduated with honours from Guys’, King’s & St Thomas’ Medical School, King’s College London.  She has over 14 years of experience in Ophthalmology, from completing her comprehensive Ophthalmic Specialist Training in Edinburgh, and further honing her skills with two advanced Glaucoma fellowships, including at the renowned Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre.

She is one of only a few Ophthalmologists in Scotland with the expertise to offer a range of Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgeries (MIGS).  MIGS is similar to keyhole surgery, safer and with quicker recovery time in comparison to conventional glaucoma surgery.  Dr Cheng also performs safe and effective routine and complex cataract surgery with excellent outcomes.  From her recent audit, 96% of patients achieved a driving standard visual acuity of 6/12 (UK average 91.8%) and a complication rate lower than national standards.

Alongside her clinical commitments, she has always been a strong advocate for medical education, from sitting on the board for The Royal College of Ophthalmologists as a trainee representative, to now serving as an examiner for both the College and the University of Edinburgh.  She is also a Clinical Supervisor actively engaging in training the next generation of general Ophthalmologists and Glaucoma specialists.
