Dr Peter J Wilson, BSc(Hons), MBChB, MRCSEd, PhD, FRCOphthbook an appointmentConsultant OphthalmologistDr Wilson is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with NHS Fife and Forth Valley, specialising in cataract and corneal surgery. A graduate of the University of Aberdeen, he undertook ophthalmology training in Dundee, where he developed a strong foundation in anterior segment surgery and completed a PhD in Surgery with a prize for best final-year thesis. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) with the Elizabeth Hunt Medal for outstanding performance.
Dr Wilson completed a prestigious Cornea and Anterior Segment Fellowship at the University of Auckland under Professor Charles McGhee, gaining extensive experience in complex cataract surgery, corneal transplantation (penetrating and lamellar), ocular trauma, and anterior segment reconstruction within a tertiary referral centre. This advanced training underpins his expertise in managing challenging cataract cases and corneal disease.
In Scotland, Dr Wilson has led the introduction of toric intraocular lenses in Fife and Forth Valley, expanding refractive options for patients undergoing cataract surgery. He is widely recognised for his expertise in biometry and lens power calculation, and is an invited speaker at national and international meetings on advanced IOL calculation and complex cataract surgery.
Dr Wilson holds significant clinical leadership roles. He has provided strategic leadership within NHS Fife and serves as Chair of the Clinical Leads for Ophthalmology in Scotland, contributing to national policy and service planning. He played a key role in the development of the National Treatment Centre for cataract surgery in Fife, helping to expand high-quality, high-volume surgical capacity.
His research interests focus on the redesign of cataract services, risk stratification, and integration of hospital and community eye care to improve access, efficiency, and patient outcomes. Through clinical innovation, education, and national leadership, Dr Wilson remains committed to delivering safe, precise, and patient-centred cataract and corneal surgery across Scotland.
