Clinical profile:
Dr Peter Cackett is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in diseases of the retina and macula. He is based at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh, where he leads the Medical Retina service, providing care for patients with conditions including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disorders and other complex retinal disease.

He completed ophthalmology training in Glasgow and Edinburgh, followed by a Medical Retina fellowship at the Singapore National Eye Centre. His clinical practice focuses on evidence-based assessment, treatment planning and long-term management of chronic retinal conditions.

Teaching and academic involvement:
Dr Cackett organises and delivers the undergraduate Ophthalmology module for medical students at the University of Edinburgh and is actively involved in postgraduate clinical training. He holds an honorary clinical senior lectureship and contributes to professional education within ophthalmology.

Research and publications:
Dr Cackett is a research-active clinician with an extensive peer-reviewed publication record in retinal disease. His work includes:

• Clinical guidance on treat-and-extend pathways for neovascular age-related macular degeneration
• Research on long-term visual and mortality outcomes in patients receiving intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy
• Studies on patient experience and holistic care in retinal disease management
• Clinical research on retinal vascular presentations and imaging
• Publications on inherited retinal disease, including genetic case reports
• Research on vision impairment, mental health, and certification of sight impairment

He also serves as a section editor for professional ophthalmology publications and undertakes medicolegal work in medical retina.
