Dr Schmoll is an ophthalmic surgeon based in Edinburgh, with a diverse practice comprising adult cataract surgery, with an additional specialist interest in paediatric ophthalmology and children’s eye problems including squint surgery.

 

Having obtained his primary medical degree (MBChB)in South Africa, Dr Schmoll moved to Edinburgh in 2003 where he trained initially in general surgical specialties and achieved the Membership examination of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh (MRCSEd).  His passion for ophthalmology led him to enter specialist training in Edinburgh, where he ultimately took up his NH consultant post after becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) in 2014 and concluding a challenging paediatric ophthalmology fellowship in Cape Town in 2015.

 

Being enthusiastic about all aspects of ophthalmology, Dr Schmoll particularly enjoys relating to individuals and their families, providing high quality patient-centred care.

 

He performs adult phacoemulsification cataract operations with outcomes that exceed the UK national standards, whilst also delivering a busy tertiary specialist paediatric ophthalmic service at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Edinburgh.

 

He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and participates actively in research, education and management activities at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh. His private consultations for adults and children have been provided at Spire Shawfair Park Hospital since 2016.

 

Away from work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children and recharges with time outdoors walking, cycling and kitesurfing.
